Coming off the success of her 2019 debut album Dangerous, Montreal artist Shay Lia let the music breathe a little throughout the first half of 2020 before dropping some new content with the single, “All Up To You.” With a brand new EP expected to drop in September, Shay Lia keeps the momentum in her favour with the release of her latest single,“Love Me, Love Me Not.”
Born in France and raised in Djibouti, Shay moved to Montreal in 2012 to study communication at the Université du Québec à Montréal. While in Montreal she posted videos of herself singing various songs to social media, one of which attracted Kaytranada’s attention and led to them becoming regular collaborators, including on the song “Leave Me Alone” from Kaytranada’s 2016 album 99.9% and his 2018 single “Chances”, for which both Kaytranada and Shay Lia received a nomination for the SOCAN Songwriting Prize in 2019.
For her latest release, Shay shares, “If this song had a scent, it would be coconut oil mixed with vanilla. I wanted it to feel intimate and soft. I was definitely exploratory with this song – I wanted my listeners to feel how sensuality, pleasure, and melancholy can blend into the same song and share the experience of being friend-zoned from a woman’s perspective. It happens to us too and we should not be afraid to share how it can make us feel! It can be empowering to be vulnerable”
